One evening, while Tom and Huck are in the cemetery, they witness a terrible scene: Joe the Indian, a thug just out of jail, and Muff Potter unearth the coffin of old Hoss Williams. They discover inside a map leading to Murrell's treasure. Suddenly, the undertaker Robinson surprises them and tries to stop them. He hits Muff. Joe grabs Muff's dagger and kills Robinson.
The next day, the crime is discovered and Muff Potter is accused. Joe the Indian does not help his sidekick, Muff defends himself by saying that they found the treasure map of Murrell. The inhabitants call him a poor fool and he is imprisoned.
Tom and Huck are the only ones who know who the real culprit is, but they vowed to say nothing to protect their own lives. Tom, caught in a case of conscience, convinces Huck to find Murrell's treasure before Joe the Indian in order to clear Muff.
